Part 1 - MASTERING EFFECTIVE MEETINGS

Tired of endless, ineffective meetings? Learn how to achieve better results from your meetings and operate as a more effective team.  Topics include planning, setting an agenda, generating ideas, multi-voting, reflective thinking, group decision-making, minutes and more. From board meetings to department meetings, this seminar can help you hold more productive, more successful meetings.

Part 2 - IDENTIFYING YOUR LEADERSHIP STYLE

Effective leadership involves many skills including motivating, gaining commitment and cooperation, team-building, resolving and preventing conflict, and influencing others.  Learn about the universal language of DiSC and how your behavioral style dictates how you work, how you communicate and how you lead.

Having completed an online DiSC personal assessment tool, you will learn about your personality and your behavior, and how you can adapt your style to others to be a more effective leader, including how to foster teamwork, and improve productivity and communication.

Part 3 - THE ROLE OF THE NONPROFIT BOARD

As nonprofits face growing complexities and challenges, board governance has never been more important.  As a board member, you bring relevant skills, expertise and networks to the organization.  Learn what your job will be as a board member - and what it's not.

Learn from an expert panel that will share their experience, discuss the roles and responsibilities of nonprofit board members, and consider the challenges and opportunities facing nonprofits.

Partner with a group of your peers and one of the expert panelists to review and discuss solutions for a true-to-life case study.

Part 4 - BOARD MATCHING

You will complete an online survey detailing your skill set and interests in the nonprofit sector to guide the board matching process.

You will then have an interview with BVU to discuss your skills and interest, and to learn about specific nonprofit board opportunities that meet your interests and skills.

BVU recommends you to a nonprofit board that meets your interest.  You will meet with the nonprofit to interview each other to ascertain if it is a "good match." If agreed, you will be submitted for election by the nonprofit's board.

 

Part 5 - MENTORING

You will be paired with an experienced community leader who will help you understand corporate and community culture through discussion and experiences.  You will meet with your mentor three times (once per month) and attend one board meeting and one community event with him/her at mutually agreeable times.

 

To apply, applicants must:


lead Be between the ages of 25 and 40

lead Be a high performing career professional with leadership experience or demonstrated leadership potential

lead Have a passion to volunteer and an interest in a more committed volunteer leadership role

lead Want to serve on a nonprofit board in Akron

lead Be able to attend and participate in three half-day educational sessions on March 1, April 5, and May 3

lead Meet with an assigned mentor at least five times

Application due by January 25. You will need to provide two professional references and a short essay descriptiong an issue in Akron that you would like to address using your skill set combined with this leadership training.
