BVU's YP Leader Corps prepares you to become an engaged leader in the community and expand your skills as you grow in your professional career.

The John S. and James L. Knight Foundation and BVU have partnered to offer a new program for young professionals who are interested in being Akron area leaders. 

YP Leader Corps

BVU's YP Leader Corps is designed to grow and launch the next generation of civic leaders in the Akron community.  The curriculum, designed for young leaders, will prepare you to make a meaningful difference in the community and develop necessary skills for both professional and personal success.

grow  Learn about corporate and community culture from an experienced community leader who will serve as your mentor
grow Learn to be a leader based on your personality type
grow  Master effective meetings and group decision-making
grow  Learn roles and responsibilities of nonprofit board service
grow  Expand your professional and personal networks

connect Connect with an Akron nonprofit board through BVU's highly acclaimed Board Matching Program that will match you based on your skills and passion

lead As an engaged community leader, you will develop better leadership, communication, critical thinking, problem-solving and team-building skills

This program is generously underwritten by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation.  As a result of their generosity, the fee to participate in BVU's YP Leader Corps is $500.  The fee can be paid by the candidate, the candidate's employer or a combination thereof.  Scholarship funds may be available to those who are unable to pay the entire fee.


To apply, applicants must:

lead Be between the ages of 25 and 40

lead Be a high performing career professional with leadership experience or demonstrated leadership potential

lead Have a passion to volunteer and an interest in a more committed volunteer leadership role

lead Want to serve on a nonprofit board in Akron

lead Be able to attend and participate in three half-day educational sessions on March 1, April 5, and May 3

lead Meet with an assigned mentor at least five times

Application due by January 25. You will need to provide two professional references and a short essay descriptiong an issue in Akron that you would like to address using your skill set combined with this leadership training.
